PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector smoothly performing positioning a projection area without adversely influencing an obstacle in the projection area even if the obstacle exists in the projection area during preparation. SOLUTION: The projector 1 is equipped with: laser beam sources 4R, 4G and 4B emitting a laser beam; an auxiliary light source (red LED light source 8) emitting auxiliary light other than the laser beam; an introduction optical system (movable mirror 9) introducing the auxiliary light into the optical path of the laser beam; and a light source control part 11 controlling the laser beam source and the auxiliary light source in each of a preparation mode and an observation mode. The light source control part 11 turns off the laser beam source and turns on the auxiliary light source in the preparation mode, and turns at least on the laser beam source in the observation mode. In the preparation mode, an area including the projection area on a surface to be projected is irradiated with the auxiliary light emitted from the auxiliary light source.
