The method involves hardware-technically converting a distributed function by a set of components that are cross linked over a communication system. A control unit is provided by each component for conversion of the distributed function and is assigned to the distributed function. Analysis units (1) and action and logic units (3) are selected and graphically linked with one another. A diagnosis of the control units corresponding to the selected analysis units is performed by activating the selected analysis units or selected action and logic units. An independent claim is also included for a diagnosing system for a motor vehicle.
