The unit (1) has an electronic display apparatus i.e. monitor screen (5), and a control element (3) connected to the apparatus, where the control element is formed by a gear lever (7) for operating a vehicle gearbox. The gear lever can be moved between multiple positions (9) such as forward, reverse, neutral and parking positions, so that the lever can be used to control peripheral instruments e.g. audio system, in and/or from any position. Vibration devices (27) vibrate the gear lever. Graphical settings on the display apparatus can be changed by operation of the sections of the gear lever.
