The vehicle seat (1) has a deformation body (13) arranged for the transmission of an impact momentum to the area of an activation device (9). The deformation body provides an impulse-dependent deformation behavior. A head restraint (3) has partial sections (7, 7') tuned towards the head of a seat passenger, where the sections are movable from a usage position into a safety position. The activation device is arranged in the area of the backrest part. The head restraint is connected by a support rod (6) with the backrest part in a height-adjustable manner. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a vehicle seat.
