PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic electroluminescent element showing high luminous efficiency and durability. SOLUTION: This organic electroluminescent element has at least one organic layer including a luminescent layer between a pair of electrodes, and is characterized in that the luminescent layer contains a metal complex including a multidentate ligand of a tridentate or more ligand; and the metal center in the metal complex contains a metal-free compound which can be coordinated as a multidentate ligand of a tridentate or more ligand.
