PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for coloring aluminum or an aluminum alloy, which uses an electrolytic coloring liquid containing no boric acid, can impart a color tone obtained by a conventional electrolytic coloring method to aluminum or the aluminum alloy, and stabilizes the electrolytic coloring liquid to prolong the life thereof. SOLUTION: The method for coloring aluminum or the aluminum alloy includes the steps of forming an anodic oxide coating on aluminum or the aluminum alloy, and coloring the aluminum or the aluminum alloy through electrolytic treatment with the use of an aqueous solution containing a metal salt, wherein the aqueous solution containsα-amino acid.
