PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermoplastic polymer with a glutaric anhydride-containing unit that has a high grade of heat resistance, a color tone and transparency, as well as excellent tensile characteristics and retention of tensile strength after moist heat treatment as compared to conventional polymers. SOLUTION: This thermoplastic polymer has a glutaric anhydride-containing unit, wherein the content of a polymer having a molecular weight of 4 times the weight average molecular weight of the polymer or higher remains equal to a specific value or less. The method for manufacturing the polymer characterized by producing an original copolymer by a copolymerization in the presence of a specific chain transfer agent is also disclosed.
