PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a medicine which is high in safety and inhibits the production of an inflammatory cytokine, TNF-α. SOLUTION: This TNF-αproduction inhibitor in animal cells is characterized by containing ferulic acid or caffeic acid derivative represented by formula (1) [R<SB>1</SB>is H or an alkoxy; R<SB>2</SB>is H, OH, or an alkoxy; R<SB>3</SB>is H, an alkoxy or a branched chain-having unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon group; R<SB>4</SB>is H or OH; X is a single bond, vinylene or ethylene; Y is an amide group (-CO-NH-), ester group (-CO-O-) or carbonyl group (-CO-); Z is a 1 to 20C divalent aliphatic hydrocarbon group substituted or unsubstituted with a hydroxy group; Q is H, an aromatic hydrocarbon group or heterocyclic group substituted or unsubstituted with a hydroxy group], a vanillic acid or protocatechuic acid derivative, chalcone derivative, gingerol or its analogue, such as N-(β- phenethyl)ferulamide, feruloyl tryptamine, 3-phenyl-2-propenyl 4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzoate, 4'-hydroxychalcone, or [6]-gingerol, as an active ingredient.
