PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rack-and-pinion type steering device capable of fully reducing abnormal noise such as tooth hammering sounds generated in an engagement part of a rack and a pinion, and capable of relaxing an unpleasant feeling given to a driver. SOLUTION: In the rack-and-pinion type steering device, a rack shaft 1 is provided with a shaft body 14 having a recession 14a extending in the axial direction on a side of the pinion 21, and supported movably in the axial direction; and the rack 13 relatively unmovable to the shaft body 14 in the axial direction, fitted in the recession 14a through an elastic body 15 so as to be relatively rocked in the peripheral direction, and engaged with the pinion 21 on the opposite side from the fitting part with the recession 14a. The rack 13 and the shaft body 14 are relatively rocked accompanied with deformation of the elastic body 15 interposed between them and having the large elastic limit, rocking is not easily transmitted to each other, the abnormal noise such as the hammering sounds generated in the engagement part of the rack 13 and the pinion 21 can be reduced, and the unpleasant feeling given to the driver can be relaxed.
