PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface coated cutting tool with a hard coated layer capable of showing excellent wear resistance in high speed cutting. SOLUTION: The surface coated cutting tool is constituted by coating a surface of a tool basic body formed by tungsten carbide cemented carbide or titanium carbon nitride cermet with a composition change (Al, Cr, Ti, B) N layer having average thickness of 1-8μm and having the points containing the maximum amount of Al-Cr and the points containing the maximum amount of Ti-B existent alternately and repeatedly at a predetermined interval along the direction of layer thickness. The percentages of Al, Cr, Ti, and B contained at the points containing the maximum amount of Al-Cr are 0.40-0.60, 0.30-0.50, 0.01-0.10, and 0.01-0.10, respectively, and the percentages of Al, Cr, Ti, and B contained at the points containing the maximum amount of Ti-B are 0.05-0.20, 0.05-0.20, 0.25-0.40, and 0.40-0.55, respectively.
