An apparatus and a method for driving image data capable of reducing peak currents are provided to reduce the voltage drop of gray scale voltages by using a matrix type digital to analog converter. A source drive device includes a hold memory block(40), decoding blocks(410,415), level shifting blocks(420,425), and a DAC(Digital to Analog Converter) block(430). The hold memory block stores digital image data. The decoding blocks generate a data code including at least one bit having a first logic level based on the digital image data and generate plural enable signals based on the data code. The level shifting blocks execute level-shifting on the data code based on the enable signals. The DAC block outputs gray scale voltages based on the shifted data code outputted from the level shifting blocks.
