A computer based system (48) controlling the safety of a process comprises control entities (50, 52, 56, 58, 60, 62) including at least one sensor (56, 58, 60) for measuring process properties, at least one entity property providing unit (66, 68, 72) for providing operational properties of safety entities used and a device (78) for determining the safety of the system. This device (78) obtains a number of process variables based on measured process properties in the system, determines a current quantified risk of the process, determines a quantified current safety level of safety entities (50, 52, 62) used based on operational properties of these entities, compares the risk with the safety level and generates a safety balance value corresponding to a residual risk of the process section indicative of the safety based on the comparison.
