APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR HEADER SUPPRESSION/COMPRESSION FOR PROVIDING MBS IN BROADBAND WIRELESS ACCESS SYSTEM

A header compression apparatus for an MBS(Multicast and Broadcast Service) in a BWA(Broadband Wireless Access) system and a method thereof are provided to minimize complexity and a waste of processing capacity by separately arranging compression queues in compressing headers according to MBS channels or zones. A BSC(Base Station Controller) judges whether an MBS service terminal supports a compression function(201). If so, the BSC confirms whether the overhead ratio of a packet received from an MBS server is great(203). In case the overhead ratio of the received packet is low, the BSC compresses the header of the packet through a compression algorithm of an associated MBS channel(205). In this case, the header of the packet can be compressed through an ROHC(Robust Header Compression) algorithm, a PHS(Payload Header Suppression) algorithm or an uncompressed algorithm. In case the header of the packet is compressed according to the ROHC algorithm, the header-compressed packet is stored in an ROHC queue. If the header of the packet is compressed according to the PHS algorithm, the header-compressed packet is stored in the first PHS queue. If the uncompressed algorithm is applied to the header of the packet, the packet is stored in the first uncompressed queue as it was, without being compressed(209).
