913,141. Retractable roofs. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. Jan. 18, 1961 [March 2, 1960], No. 2028/61. Class 108(1). A motor vehicle has a retractable rigid roof, the rear section comprising roof rails 23, 24 and side rails 18, 19 joined by a panel 33 beneath which are attached arms 36 coupled to a shaft 40, rotation of which transports the roof section from a top raised to a top lowered position n within the vehicle body. A rigid front roof section 15 is hinged at 17. to the side rails and connected by a pair of links 85 pinned at 91 to brackets within the body so that when the rear roof section is retracted the two roof sections fold together. To the lower ends of the links 85 a r e attached members 103 (Fig. 7) carrying a package tray comprising members 94, 98 connected by hinge 97. When the top is raised panel 33 acts as a package tray, the members 94, 98 being folded, but when the top is lowered the links 85 and members 103 pivot clockwise about pins 91 unfolding the tray as shown chaindotted. the panel 33 being lowered with the rear roof section. Before lowering or raising the roof the rear-hinged deck lid 13. (Fig. 2, not shown) is raised by jacks 107 (Fig. 1) connected to a motor 113, limit switches preventing movement of the roof when the lid is closed. To lower the roof the motor 46 operates a jackshaft and linkage 58, 62, 67 to first release the latch holding the roof in position and then rotate shaft 40 and arms 36 to transport the roof. A counterbalance spring 92 is connected to lever 93 on shaft 40, being extended when the roof is raised and helping initial retraction.
