A display device is provided to form a cover layer with a low light transmittance by coating a color filter used in a display area without any additional process. Substrates(100,200) include a display area(D) and a peripheral area(P). A light blocking member(210) is formed at a part of the display area and at the peripheral area. Color filters(220) are provided at the display area. A cover layer(230) is provided on at least a portion of an upper surface of the light blocking member at the peripheral area. The color filters include red, green, and blue color filters(221-223), and the cover layer is formed by using at least one of the red, green, and blue color filters. An opaque film is used as the cover layer. A sealing member(300) seals the upper and lower substrates, and is separated from the cover layer at edges of the peripheral area.
