An apparatus for driving a display panel is provided to apply a ramp pulse voltage having a constant slope to electrode lines irrespective of the variation of load rates by varying the slope of the ramp pulse voltage according to the variation of the load rates. A display panel includes discharge cells formed by plural electrode lines. By applying a ramp pulse voltage, which is increased or decreased from a first voltage level to a second voltage level, to at least one of the electrode lines during an applying time based on a set time, the display panel is driven. An apparatus for driving the display panel includes a load rate detecting unit(36) and a slope setting unit(37). The load rate detecting unit detects load rates corresponding to the number of discharge cells generating sustain discharge among whole discharge cells. The slope setting unit sets the set time in inverse proportion to the load rates.
