An information service device using an SMS(Short Message Service) of a portable terminal and a method thereof are provided to share presence information between members of a group without another device such as a presence server, thereby increasing utility of the terminal without restrictions on a device. A presence information file is generated(S301,S303). A message for presence information having the presence information file is generated. The message for the presence information is transmitted to members of a preset user group by using an SMS(S305). The presence information file is generated by creating a file consisting of a divider for dividing the message for the presence information, an identifier for identifying and authenticating a user, a presence code where a value corresponding to predetermined presence information is recorded, and an ID for distinguishing the user.
