A pharmaceutical composition comprising gamma-polyglutamic acid is provided to prevent, alleviate and inhibit coughing effectively by comprising the gamma-polyglutamic acid, lycopene and a cyclooxygenase-2(COX-2) inhibitor, and at least one selected from the group consisting of collagen, beta-glucan, isoflavone, aloe powder and Acanthopanax senticosus, thereby being widely used as a medicine for treating the coughing rapidly. A pharmaceutical composition for treating coughing comprises gamma-polyglutamic acid as an effective ingredient. The composition further comprises lycopene, a COX-2 inhibitor or a mixture thereof, wherein the COX-2 inhibitor includes a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent such as aspirin, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, indomethacin, naproxen, phenacetin, mefenamic acid, celecoxib, diclofenac, etodolac, fenoprofen, ketoprofen, ketoralac, oxaprozin, nabumetone, sulindac, tolmetin or rofecoxib.
