A plasma display device and a manufacturing method thereof are provided to reduce the number of components by preparing a rear substrate using a metal and forming an oxide film on a surface of the rear substrate. A front substrate(110) and a rear metallic substrate(120) are opposite to each other, and plural grooves(111,121) are formed on the rear substrate facing the front surface, in which an oxide film(122) is applied on the surface of the rear substrate. Barrier ribs(130) are interposed between the front and rear substrates to define discharge cells(S). Discharge electrodes(131,132) are disposed in the barrier ribs, and are extended to enclose at least a portion of the discharge cells. Phosphor(125) is applied in the grooves, and the discharge cells are filled with a discharge gas.
