A method and a device for managing digital rights are provided to enable a user to use DRM(Digital Rights Management) contents flexibly regardless of the device while protecting the digital rights of the contents stored in a remote device. A remote device(120) includes a requestor(630) requesting contents to a service providing device by receiving a certificate, which includes information for permitting a remote device to use the contents, from a main device having a playback right of the contents and a player(640) playing the contents received from the service providing device. The main device includes a certificate generator generating the certificate, which includes the information for permitting the remote device to use the contents, a communicator transmitting the certificate to the remote device, and a controller. The controller updates state information of an RO(Rights Object) when the service providing device wanting to provide the contents to the remote device requests update of the state information of the RO capacity playing the contents.
