The invention relates to compounds, compositions, methods of using and pr ocesses for producing optically active .alpha.-hydroxy derivatives using a c ombination of a chemical and biochemical methods. The process comprises reac ting an ester compound with a racemic compound in the presence of an enzyme to obtain compounds (compositions and methods). The compounds produced may b e useful for starting materials for physiologically active materials, functi onal materials and the like.
