One field for displaying a screen of a plasma display panel is formed by a first sub field having a relatively small number of sustain discharge times and a second sub field having a relatively large number of sustain discharge times. A detection circuit detects whether to generate a sustain discharge in the second sub field for each display line. A sustain control circuit generates a sustain discharge by a preset standard number of times in each sub field in a high-luminance display line generating a sustain discharge in the second sub field and generates a sustain discharge by the number of times smaller than the standard number at least in one of the first sub fields in the low-luminance display line not generating sustain discharge in the second sub field. As a result, it is possible to lower the luminance of a dark image when a bright image and a dark image are mixed in a screen.
