The present invention relates to a composition for the direct dyeing of keratinous fibres, in particular human keratinous fibres, such as the hair, comprising, in a medium appropriate for dyeing, i) at least one anionic or cationic direct dye and ii) at least one specific ammonium salt derived from 18MEA. The invention also relates to the dyeing method employing the said composition. The dyeing compositions of the invention have improved cosmetic properties; in particular, they leave an excellent feel on the hair after colouring the keratinous fibres.
