A process for geometric isomerization of halogenated olefins is provided to convert a halogenated C2-C6 olefin isomer(cis-1,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene) into a more desired isomer(trans-1,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene) with a high conversion and selectivity. A process for converting cis-1,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene into trans-1,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene comprises the steps of: (a) providing a reactor feed stream comprising cis-1,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene; and (b) introducing the reactor feed stream under catalytic reaction conditions sufficient to convert at least a part of the cis-1,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene in the feed into trans-1,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene. The conditions include exposing the feed stream to a metal-based catalyst selected from the group consisting of halogenated metal oxides, Lewis acid metal halides, zero-valent metals and combinations thereof.
