An electronic still camera (10) is provided for photographing an object by a CCD imaging element (20) and electronically recording the image of the object. The electronic still camera is provided with a second image processing section (34) for determining, at the time of photographing, a region of interest in the image of the object to be electronically recorded; an image compressing/decompressing section (36) for reversibly compressing the image data of the region of interest or irreversibly compressing it at a compression ratio lower than a prescribed value; and a buffer (54) for continuous shooting, which records the image data of the region of interest of the images in one of the image storing formats among a format of being uncompressed, a format of being reversibly compressed at the image compressing/decompressing section (36) and a format of being irreversibly compressed at the image compressing/decompressing section (36).
