In the process of treating spent liquor obtained from the digestion of silica-containing straw, grass, bamboo, or other cellulose-containing material with an alkali, the spent liquor is treated, before evaporation, with lime, e.g. burnt lime, in excess of the quantity equivalent to the silica content, the precipitated calcium silicate is separated and the alkali is recovered from the filtrate in known manner by evaporating, burning, dissolving, and cauticizing operations.
