A portable electronic device that, even if the battery runs down, can be quickly enabled for operation without relying on the battery. The electricity generation unit (131) has a mechanism for winding a spring (133) by pulling out a pull line (113) wrapped around a pulley (135) and also has a mechanism for transmitting torque generated when the spring (133) unwinds to a motor (142) to rotate it at high speed. The output of the motor (142) is regulated and leveled in voltage by a constant voltage circuit and directly supplied as the power to a power consuming component. In a portable electronic device having two connected housings, the spring (133) can also be wound by movement of the housings when they are opened and closed.
