PROCESS FOR PRODUCTION OF BIREFRINGENT FILM, BIREFRINGENT FILM, AND LAMINATE

Disclosed is a process for producing a birefringent film having a three-dimensionally controlled refractive index, having a small thickness, hardly deteriorated in optical properties when exposed to high-temperature/high-humidity conditions, and having a good orientation property. Specifically disclosed is a process for producing a birefringent film, comprising the steps of: (1) preparing a solution comprising at least one polycyclic compound having a -SO<SUB>3</SUB>M group and/or a -COOM group [wherein M represents a counter ion] and a solvent and showing a nematic liquid crystal phase; (2) preparing a base material having at least one surface hydrophilically treated; and (3) coating the solution prepared in the step (1) onto the hydrophilically treated surface of the base material provided in the step (2) and drying the resulting product, wherein the water contact angle on the hydrophilically treated surface of the base material provided in the step (2) is 45° or less at 23°C.
