Amino acid sequences derived from Family 6 cellulases are disclosed that comprise a proline residue at position 413, with reference to the amino acid numbering of SEQ ID NO: 1 Additionally, the amino acid sequences may comprise one or more modifications selected from the group comprising, a serine or threonine residue at position 231, a serine or threonine residue at position 305, and a glutamine or asparagine residue at position 410, with reference to the amino acid numbering of SEQ ID NO: 1, SEQ ID NO: 21, and SEQ ID NO: 22, wherein the cellulase exhibits one or more of increased thermostability, increased thermophilicity, increased alkalophilicity, or a combination thereof.
