This invention provides a positive electrode active material, which has a high level of safety, has a high discharge capacitance even at a high operating voltage, and has excellent charge/discharge cycle characteristics, a method for manufacturing the positive electrode active material, and a rechargeable battery with a nonaqueus electrolyte, comprising the positive electrode active material. The positive electrode active material for a rechargeable battery with a nonaqueous electrolyte is characterized by comprising surface-modified lithium-containing composite oxide particles comprising particles of a lithium-containing composite oxide represented by general formula LipNxO2 wherein N = NiyM1-y-zLz; M represents at least one of Co and Mn; L represents an element selected from transition metals other than Ni, Co, and Mn, alkaline earth metals, and aluminum; and 0.9 <= p <= 1.1, 0.9 <= x < 1.1, 0.2 <= y <= 0.9, and 0 <= z <= 0.3, and a surface layer containing aluminum, the content of aluminum in the surface layer in its part within 5 nm from the surface being not less than 0.8 in terms of atomic ratio based on the total of Ni and element M. |
