PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten the time (recovery time) needed for initializing operation for adjusting image data of an image read to a suitable range which is performed at power-on time or during a recovery from an energy-saving mode to an operation mode, and to maintain high reliability of the adjustment to the suitable range. SOLUTION: An image reader including an amplifier 211 which amplifies the analog signal of a CCD, a first white plate 239A, and a white level adjusting means of adjusting the gain of the amplifier 211 by reading the first white plate is equipped with a power supply starting means of starting supplying an operating voltage for image read and a power supply stopping means of stopping the supply, and control means 31a and 220 which stop the power supply after white level adjustment is made and the gain is written to a memory 221 when stopping the power supply and set the gain in the memory 221 to the amplifier 21, when the power supply is started. A second reference white plate 239B is provided at a reference stop position and when the power supply is started, the second reference white plate 239B is read, where there is no difference from a last read value, an image is read without adjusting the white level.
