PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin film magnetic head which can effectively block the magnetic coupling between a shield layer and a free layer even when element size is very small, and provide a magnetic disk drive thereof. SOLUTION: The thin film magnetic head has a lower shield layer simultaneously serving as a lower electrode, an MR layered product that is formed on the lower shield layer with a current running perpendicular to its layer, a magnetic domain control layer laterally formed on both sides of a track on the MR layered product, a diamagnetic material layer formed on the MR layered product and the magnetic domain control layer with a conductivity in the direction perpendicular to the layered surface and negative in magnetization, and an upper shield layer formed on the diamagnetic material layer and simultaneously serving as an upper electrode.
