<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new material which exhibits excellent catalytic performance as a catalyst for a solid polyelectrolyte fuel cell, particularly is excellent in the characteristic of selectively oxidizing carbon monoxide and can exert superior performance as the electrode catalyst of a fuel cell even in such a state that carbon monoxide exists. <P>SOLUTION: There is provided a perovskite type composite oxide expressed by the composition formula: (Ba<SB>1-x</SB>A<SB>x</SB>)BH<SB>a</SB>O<SB>3-b</SB>(wherein A is at least one element selected from the group consisting of lanthanoid and the elements of group 2 in the periodic table; and B is at least one element selected from the group consisting of the elements of groups 3, 4, 13 and transition metal elements in the fourth cycle of the periodic table). Besides, the invention provides a noble metal-containing perovskite type composite oxide prepared by heat-treating the above composite oxide in such a state in contact with the noble metal components.
