<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a long-life backlight used for a liquid crystal display or the like, and using a hot cathode fluorescent lamp (hereinafter called HCFL). <P>SOLUTION: This backlight is provided with: a back frame 1b having an opening 1b1, a bottom part 1b2 and a side part 1b3; an optical surface material 4 arranged on the opening 1b1 side of the back frame 1b; and the HCFLs 3 arranged in the back frame 1b to set at least either of a distance D2 to the bottom part 1b2 of the back frame 1b or a distance D1 to the optical surface material 4 not larger than 3.0 mm.
