PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for refining a metal, the maintenance work of which is facilitated to improve the operation rate thereof, and to provide a method for refining the metal by using the apparatus for refining the metal. SOLUTION: The apparatus for refining the metal is provided with a melting furnace 1 and a precipitation unit 93 for precipitating the molten metal. The precipitation unit for precipitating the molten metal is composed of a hollow rotary shaft part 90, a hollow rotary cooling body part 91 and a connection member 92. The hollow rotary shaft part 90 is inserted into a through-hole 6 arranged on a ceiling wall 1a. A gasket 9 is arranged between the through-hole 6 and the outer peripheral surface of a hollow rotary shaft 3. The hollow rotary shaft part 90 is formed so that an outside diameter of the hollow rotary shaft part does not exceed an inside diameter of the gasket 9 in a range from such a portion that the hollow rotary shaft part 90 is inserted into the through-hole 6 to the bottom end of the hollow rotary shaft part to be connected to an adapter 30 at the least.
