PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a prestressed combined tension and pressure element fixable between two pedicle screws or pedicle hooks in a vertebral column fixing device. SOLUTION: A damping element 1 has (A) two spring elements 2, 4 coaxial or parallel with a longitudinal axis 3, and two connecting parts 5, 6 located at the ends in an axial direction, wherein (B) the first spring element 2 has a spring constant F, while (C) the second spring element 4 has a spring constant f, and (D) the spring constants F and f are different from each other. A device for stabilizing adjacent vertebral bodies has (A) N pedicle screws or pedicle hooks, wherein N≥3, (B) each pedicle screw or each pedicle hook has a holding means capable of holding longitudinal fixing elements, and (C) an element acting as a spring is inserted between two adjacent pedicle screws or pedicle hooks.
