<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus having a plurality of image forming sections, the apparatus being capable of shortening the time required to output a monochrome image. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes the plurality of image forming sections for forming images by transferring a developer to a recording material. The image forming apparatus has a first mode, in which an image formed by the black image forming section 20K is directly transferred to a recording material P that is being conveyed, and a second mode in which images formed by the color image forming sections 20Y, 20M, and 20C are transferred directly to the recording material being conveyed.
