PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a polyimide resin satisfying catalytic activity, heat-resistance, electrical insulation, colorless transparency, resin stability, etc., at the same time and having excellent characteristics and a polyimide resin varnish obtained by the production method. SOLUTION: The method for producing a polyimide resin comprises the reaction of (a) a trivalent and/or tetravalent polycarboxylic acid derivative having an acid anhydride group with (b) a polyisocyanate in an organic solvent by using a polymerization catalyst comprising an aluminum complex selected from a compound expressed by general formula (1), a compound expressed by general formula (2) and a compound expressed by general formula (3).
