PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type display device using a liquid crystal display element of active matrix driving system capable of preventing a display performance from being deteriorated due to a stripe domain. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display element is configured by holding a liquid crystal layer between a pair of substrates arranged to face each other, wherein a twisted nematic type liquid crystal used in the liquid crystal layer satisfies dielectric constant anisotropyΔεof 0<Δε<8 and twist elastic modulus K22 of K22>6.0pN when the refractive index anisotropyΔn is 0.16≤Δn<0.18, and satisfies dielectric constant anisotropyΔεof 0<Δε<13 and twist elastic modulus K22 of K22>3.0pN when the refractive index anisotropyΔn is 0.18≤Δn<0.20, at a room temperature (for example, 20°C).
