PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for press work which can form a clear character line. SOLUTION: The apparatus 10 for press work forms the formed product having the character line. The apparatus 10 for press work comprises an upper die 38 and a lower die 52 which are arranged on both sides of a steel sheet 12, an upper die mechanism 18 for making the upper die 38 advance and recede with respect to the lower die 52, a first holder 42 and a second holder 44 for applying a wrinkle suppressing force by holding the steel sheet 12, and a control section 16 for controlling the upper die mechanism 18 and the first holder 42. The upper die 38 is divided into a first upper die 48 and a second upper die 58 above the character line of the formed product. The first holder 42 and the second holder 44 are arranged on the sides of the first upper die 48 and the second upper die 58 respectively. The control section 16 controls the press work such that first the steel sheet 12 is pressed by the second upper die 58 while making the wrinkle suppressing force by the first holder 42 larger than the wrinkle suppressing force by the second holder 44, and then the steel sheet 12 is pressed by the first upper die 48.
