PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress power consumed by an indoor unit and an outdoor unit in a standby mode to the minimum by cutting off external power supplied to the outdoor unit when performing the standby mode wherein operation of an air conditioner is temporarily stopped, in the air conditioner and a control method therefor. SOLUTION: In this air conditioner, when a changeover to an operation mode is newly performed in a standby operation state, power is supplied to an outdoor unit power supply part from an indoor unit power supply part through a communication line, and initial operation of the outdoor unite is performed. Accordingly, by completely cutting off the external power supplied to the outdoor unite in the standby operation state and keeping only the indoor unite in a standby state, the standby power consumption of the air conditioner can be suppressed to the minimum.
