PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyesterimide having a high glass transition temperature, low linear thermal expansion (coefficient), extremely low water absorption, high modulus of elasticity, sufficient toughness and sufficient adhesiveness with metallic foil in combination, and to provide a method for producing the polyesterimide. SOLUTION: The polyesterimide has a repeating unit represented by formula (5), wherein X represents a linking group consisting of two aromatic groups and one ester group, or three aromatic groups and two ester groups, and A represents a divalent aromatic group or aliphatic group.
