<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a card reader/writer having reduced size and improved in user convenience. <P>SOLUTION: A card reader/writer for both contact and noncontact types, into which either a contact-type contact card, a noncontact-type noncontact card, or a combination card for both the contact and noncontact type, is inserted, has only one card slot 6 for card insertion; using a contact card terminal 4 and a noncontact antenna 5, the card reader/writer detects whether an IC card inserted in the card slot is a contact card, a noncontact card or a combination card.
