PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process capable of simply, efficiently and industrially producing optically active (S)-7-hydroxy-6-methylheptan-2-one and precursor thereof. SOLUTION: The process for producing optically active (S)-2-methyl-6-oxoheptanoate ester represented by formula (III) (wherein, R<SP>1</SP>is the same as the above defined), in which an esterase derived from a microorganism of the genus Aspergillus, capable of preferentially hydrolyzing R form is allowed to act on 2-methyl-6-oxoheptanoate ester represented by formula (II) (wherein, R<SP>1</SP>is a 1-5C alkyl group) to optically resolve it, is provided.
