In making a wire element with a strip of metal attached, such as used for forming into cathodes for electron discharge tubes, lamp filaments and resistances, a wire of the desired length is periodically cut from a reel, a strip being secured to it either before or after the cutting and the strip is then used to convey the cut-off piece of wire along the machine to a point of discharge before the strip itself is cut to length. The end of a metal tape 5 is bent over by a roll 7 and former 8 and the reel 4 is then moved bodily so that the strip hooks around a wire from a reel 1 and is firmly pressed about the wire by dies 9a and 9b. Cutters 10 sever the required length of wire which is then carried by the strip to a position where the latter is sheared by cutters 12, when the entire element falls on to a conveyer belt 11. |
