PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a printer from being deteriorated to a printing speed which does not satisfy a specification by continuously supplementing ink to a reservoir during a printing action. SOLUTION: To control the printing speed of an image forming apparatus, the image forming apparatus has a reservoir 42 for feeding a liquid ink to a print head and a level sensor 80 in the reservoir and detects whether the level in the print head reservoir 42 is in an open loop situation (the ink is at a definite level or lower) or a closed loop situation (the ink is at a definite level or higher). A solid region range (SAC) value of a page of a printing job to the image forming apparatus is detected, and in accordance with the level sensor indicating the open loop situation, the printing speed is adjusted to a target speed. The target speed can be a function of the SAC value. In accordance with the level sensor indicating the closed loop situation, the printing speed is adjusted to a default speed.
