PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device having a simple structure, and capable of preventing the rate of light modulation from being changed against the intention of a user even when an instantaneous power fault occurs, in a discharge lamp lighting device changing the rate of light modulation of a discharge lamp by the on/off operation of a power switch. SOLUTION: When an operator carries out an off first operation turning on/off the power switch, this discharge lamp lighting device sequentially tentatively changes the rate of light modulation of the discharge lamp like Sd=114 or Sd=113 at a predetermined time interval from a value (Sd=115) set up to then.
