PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording apparatus capable of efficiently utilizing a recording area of a recording medium when recoding a motion picture source for executing only the reproduction equivalent to usual fast-forward reproduction. SOLUTION: The harddisk recorder 100 has an MPEG encoder 104 for compressing the motion picture source inputted; a recording/reproducing section 105 for temporarily recording the compression data compressed by the MPEG encoder 104 into a platter 106 and reading the temporarily recorded compressed data; an MPEG decoder 107 for decoding the compressed data read by the recording/reproducing section 105; a main control section 112 for thinning a predetermined proportion of frames from the motion picture data decoded by the MPEG decoder 107; the MPEG encoder 104 for compressing the motion picture data in which the frames are thinned by the main control section 112; and the recording/reproducing section 105 for recording the data compressed by the MPEG encoder 104 in the platter 106.
