Disclosed is a process for the synthesis of 1,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene comprising: a) reacting a compound of the formula (I) CHFX₂ with a compound of formula (II) CH₂-CF₂ to produce a reaction product comprising a compound of formula (III) CHXFCH₂CXF₂, wherein each X is independently selected from the group consisting of chlorine, bromine and iodine; and (b) exposing said compound of formula (III) to reaction conditions effective to convert said compound to 1,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene.
