<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a membrane electrode assembly having methanol crossover resistance and keeping stability for a long time, and to provide a manufacturing method of the membrane electrode assembly. <P>SOLUTION: The membrane electrode assembly is composed of: an electrolyte membrane made of an aromatic hydrocarbon polymer material having a sulfonic group; and a porous catalyst layer composed of carbon particles, a catalyst metal, and the aromatic hydrocarbon polymer material having the sulfonic group joined to the electrolyte membrane, and gradually increasing pore sizes from one surface to the other surface.
